I Shot the Sheriff has a very interesting history. The song was originally written and performed by the legendary Bob Marley in his signature reggae style, yet the song only reached record breaking popularity when Eric Clapton put his own bluesy spin to the tune. That's not to say one version or the other is better, both are excellent for their intended audiences, its just interesting how much the "genre" of a song has to do with its popularity. Personally, I prefer Eric Clapton's version as it has a much catchier beat and doesn't seem to take itself as seriously as Marley's version.
The song, understandably, is about an individual that claims he shot the local sheriff but not the deputy sheriff. Bob Marley's vocal performance is excellent, and the beat is fairly good, but I really disliked the background vocals and found they detracted from the overall song. I would still recommend giving the song a listen, especially if you enjoy reggae music or if you have only been exposed to Eric Clapton's version and would like to hear the original.
