Naughty Bear - great concept / poor execution
I had watched most of the promotional materials leading up to the release of Naughty Bear and was really looking forward to this game because of it. The trailers were extremely funny and I found the concept of having a cute, cuddly, teddy bear actually being a killer to be very unique and original. I had a free rental from Blockbuster and saw this game lying on the shelf and just had to rent it. Boy, what a bad mistake that was. That will teach me to try out a game before checking out the reviews.
The game started out well enough. I was treated to a short, funny, video clip of Naughty Bear being picked on and listening to the narrator explaining how Naughty Bear was going to get revenge on the bears who were being mean to him. The narrator, by the way, sounded very much like the narrator for the popular children's show Bananas in Pajamas which is very funny in and of itself. Anyways, back to the game, you control Naughty Bear and basically dispose of the evil bears using various weapons such as a bear traps and hatchets. You can also go all "Sam Fisher"-like and sneak up on your enemies and take them out without them suspecting anything bad is about to happen.
Unfortunately, the game is just too repetitive and doesn't really contain enough story or gameplay to keep you hooked. Each level basically comes down to “this bear was mean to you, go kill him and his friends” over and over again. The controls are also horrible. The one redeemable quality of the game, the videoclips, are too few in number – you get only one short video clip for every several levels of play. Personally, after playing the game for two hours I had had enough and took the game back to the store. I found this very disappointing as I was really looking forward to this game – hopefully the developers will learn a few things and make some major improvements if they decide to release a sequel. For now, however, you should definitely avoid this game.
