Arcade Hoops DSiWare is a very nice and affordable 200 point title.
I just received a new DSI XL for Christmas and decided to visit the Nintendo DSi Shop the other day :) I was hoping I could find an interesting pick up and play title that I could play while waiting on the bus or during breaks in the day. I wanted to stay with the cheaper titles and Arcade Hoops caught my eye.
Arcade Hoops by Skyworks Interactive is a basketball arcade simulation game in which you use the stylus to shoot basketballs. It is very similar to what you would find in a Pizza Parlour. Ie. Chuck E Cheese. The game includes 3 modes: 1.) Classic Mode which is a traditional shoot as many balls in 45 seconds mode. 2.) Progressive Mode which has a moving backboard in which you alternate between 2 point and 3 point shots in 99 seconds and 3.) Three Point Mode - which involves shooting as many 3 point shots as you can in 45 seconds. All three of these modes are pretty fun and especially like progressive mode.
The mechanics of the game are simple to use and basically just involve flicking the stylus on the lower screen to shoot and aim, but the mechanism is also hard to master. I found even after playing this title over 20 times that I have still not mastered the game which is pretty good for a 200 Wii point title.
The graphics are just average unfortunately and you don't really see much animation or variety in the balls or backgrounds. The sound is not much better, and the creators chose to only include 3 different music tracks, so it is probably best to just mute the sound in this game.
The main negative I think with this game is the fact that it has NO multiplayer. I was really disappointed in this, but I can understand that they chose to limit resources since it is a budget title. I really wish they would have at least offered a way to change your name, so you could at least save your friends top scores when he/she played on your DS :(.
Overall the game is quite fun, and is the perfect pick up and play title when you want a break from all the hardcore games. I found it is the perfect 2 minute game and have to say it is a great value at 200 points. I recommend it to all DSi owners.
